Typical US windows and doors wastage
Windows are made to order — there is no wastage, but rough-opening tolerances of ±1/4" are standard. Measure rough openings before ordering, and confirm the installer's flashing detail. Our defaults reflect common US trade allowances, and can be adjusted upwards for non-standard geometry or downwards where experience supports a lower figure.

On-site considerations for glass weight
Replacement windows must meet NFRC ratings (U-factor, SHGC) for the climate zone. Egress windows in sleeping rooms have IRC R310 minimum dimensions — measure before ordering.

Windows and doors in new work must meet IECC U-factor and SHGC limits by climate zone (typical 0.30 U-factor in CZ 5–6). Egress and tempered-glazing requirements per IRC R310 and R308. When in doubt, file a pre-application question with your local building department — early clarity is cheaper than a corrective inspection.

Sources & methodology
This tool calculates the weight of a glass panel by multiplying its area in square feet by its thickness in inches and a per-type density factor, expressed as pounds per square foot per inch of thickness. The core formula is: Weight (lb) = (Width_in × Height_in ÷ 144) × thickness_in × (density_pcf ÷ 12) × number of panes. Standard annealed float glass uses a density of approximately 157 lb/ft³ (roughly 13.1 lb per sq ft per inch of thickness), consistent with GANA Glazing Manual figures; laminated and other glass types use adjusted density values. Multi-pane configurations are handled by multiplying the single-pane result by the pane count.

Are glass weight calculator results accurate enough to order materials?
Use them as a starting estimate only. Verifying the final quantity with your supplier or contractor before ordering is good practice — site conditions, wastage and cut-offs all affect the true figure.
Why does glass type affect the calculated weight?
Tempered and laminated glass have slightly different densities than standard annealed float glass because of the manufacturing process and, for laminated glass, the interlayer material. The calculator applies a density factor specific to the selected glass type, so the same pane dimensions can produce a different weight depending on which type you select.
Is this tool a substitute for a supplier quote or professional inspection?
No. This tool is a planning estimator. For work that affects structure, building code compliance, gas, electrical, plumbing, or drainage to a public sewer, consult a licensed contractor or design professional.
Can I calculate the weight for double or triple glazing?
Yes — increase the Panes input to reflect the number of glass layers in the unit and enter the thickness of a single pane. The calculator multiplies the single-pane weight by the number of panes to give a combined total, though it does not account for the air or gas gap between panes since that does not add to the glass weight.
