Sources & methodology
This calculator converts the entered window width and height (in inches) into an insulating glass unit (IGU) size by deducting a standard reveal allowance (approximately 0.8 in / 20 mm total) on each dimension to approximate the actual glazed unit a glazier would order, rather than the full rough-opening size. Panel area is then calculated in square feet. Panel weight is estimated from the panel area, the entered glazing thickness, and a nominal glass density (approximating a sealed double-glazed unit with two panes and a spacer), returning an estimated weight per panel in pounds. The tool multiplies the panel count you enter to summarize how many replacement panels are needed; it does not calculate material cost.

Are glass replacement calculator results accurate enough to order materials?
Use them as a starting estimate only. Verifying the final quantity with your supplier or contractor before ordering is good practice — site conditions, wastage and cut-offs all affect the true figure.
Does the calculator account for cutting waste or offcuts?
No. The tool calculates the deduct (IGU) size directly from the rough opening dimensions you enter and does not add a wastage allowance. Order slightly larger stock sheet sizes or ask your glazier to account for offcuts and handling breakage separately.
