This tool calculates the number of sliding or bifold door panels required to span a given opening width. Panel count is the opening width divided by the panel width, rounded up to the nearest whole panel (minimum 2 panels). For bifold configurations, the effective (usable) opening is the total opening width minus one panel width, since one panel remains within the track when open. For sliding configurations, the effective opening is approximated as half the total opening width, reflecting a typical two-panel sliding arrangement where one panel always overlaps the other. Track span is the total width spanned by all panels. Spans wider than roughly 10 ft (3 m) commonly require a structural steel or engineered header above the opening; a suitably qualified structural engineer should confirm header sizing for wide spans.
