Sources & methodology

This calculator finds the slant length of a common rafter using the Pythagorean theorem: rafter length equals the square root of the sum of the run squared and the rise squared, plus any eave overhang (L = √(r² + s²) + o). Pitch is expressed in degrees, which is a valid alternative to the rise-in-12 notation more common in US residential framing. The main assumption is a common rafter on a simple gable roof; hip and valley rafters require separate geometric adjustments not performed here.
