Sources & methodology

This calculator estimates annual heating energy savings from replacing windows by comparing the thermal performance of existing and new glazing using their U-values (expressed in W/m²·K). The core formula multiplies the U-value difference by the glazed area, the indoor-to-outdoor temperature difference (°C), and annual heating hours, then divides by 1,000 to convert to kWh. Note that glazed area entered in ft² is converted to m² before the SI U-value formula is applied, and results are translated to cost and CO₂ savings using user-supplied or default energy price and emissions factors. U-values are treated as whole-assembly values, and the estimate covers conductive heat loss only — it does not account for solar gain, infiltration, or cooling season effects.

Where do I find the U-value of my existing and new windows?

Existing single-glazed windows are often around U=3.0–5.0 W/m²K; older double glazing is typically U=2.5–3.0 W/m²K. New window U-values are listed on the NFRC label or manufacturer spec sheet — use the whole-assembly (not centre-of-glass) U-value for a realistic estimate.

Does this tool substitute for a professional energy audit?
