How much compost and how deep

For top-dressing or mulching beds, a 1.5–2 in layer over the surface is typical; for amending a bed before planting, compost is usually tilled into the top 4–6 in. Vegetable beds are often topped up each season as the previous dressing breaks down into the soil. Compost is loose and settles after spreading, so a freshly laid depth beds down over the first few weeks.
