How the projector throw & screen size calculator works

A projector’s throw ratio is its distance divided by the image width, so the screen width is simply the distance divided by the throw ratio. For a 16:9 image the height is nine-sixteenths of the width, and the diagonal follows from Pythagoras. The result is quoted as a diagonal in inches, the way screens are sold.

What is a throw ratio?

It is the projector distance divided by the image width. A 1.5:1 projector 10 ft away throws a roughly 6.7 ft-wide image.

How do I get a bigger image?

Move the projector back, or choose a shorter-throw projector (a lower ratio). Both increase the image width for a given room.

Does the diagonal assume 16:9?

Yes. The diagonal is derived for a 16:9 image; for other aspects use the width figure and the aspect-and-letterbox tool.

What about lens shift and keystone?

This is a size estimate only. Lens shift and keystone correct alignment and geometry once the size is set.
