This tool estimates the mortar volume required to lay a masonry wall by converting the entered wall area to square meters, multiplying by a volumetric mortar rate per unit area, then applying a wastage allowance. Typical rates used are approximately 0.022 m³ of mortar per m² of brick wall and approximately 0.010 m³ per m² of CMU (concrete masonry unit) wall, both assuming standard mortar joint thicknesses common in US masonry construction. The wastage percentage entered is applied as (1 + wastage/100) to the base volume to account for spillage, over-mixing, and offcuts. From the resulting mortar volume, the tool also estimates approximate sand volume (about 85% of mortar volume), the number of standard mortar/cement bags needed (based on roughly 11 bags per cubic meter of mortar, rounded up), and an approximate lime quantity where lime mortar is used, converted to pounds for US users. These are planning-level estimating shortcuts, not a precision material take-off — always confirm bag sizes and coverage with your supplier before ordering.
