## How the pipe internal volume calculator works This calculator estimates the internal water volume held inside a section of pipe. Enter the pipe's internal diameter in millimetres and the pipe run length in metres, and the tool calculates the volume of water the pipe section can hold using the standard cylinder volume formula: V = pi × (d/2)^2 × L, converted to litres. This is useful for sizing hot water heaters and continuous-flow units, estimating flush volumes when purging air or debris from a new pipe run, and estimating how much water will drain out when a section of pipe is isolated and opened for repair. ## Typical uses in Australian plumbing and heating work Plumbers and heating installers use internal pipe volume figures to size expansion vessels and header tanks, to estimate the water lost when isolating a section of a hydronic heating circuit for maintenance, and to work out approximate flush or dead-leg volumes in hot water reticulation. Internal diameter is the figure to use, not the nominal or outside diameter — copper, PEX and PVC pipes all have a wall thickness that reduces the internal diameter below the nominal size printed on the pipe. ## What this tool does not do This calculator does not size pipework for flow rate, pressure loss or velocity, and it does not check pipe sizing against AS/NZS 3500 plumbing and drainage standards or the National Construction Code (NCC). It only calculates the geometric internal volume from the diameter and length you enter. It does not account for fittings, valves or bends, which add a small amount of additional internal volume not captured here. ## On-site considerations for pipe internal volume Measure the actual internal diameter where possible, for example from the pipe manufacturer's datasheet, rather than assuming the nominal size. Wall thickness varies between pipe classes and materials, so two pipes with the same nominal diameter can have noticeably different internal volumes. For long runs, measure the pipe length along its actual routed path, including vertical rises, rather than the straight-line distance between two points. ## The National Construction Code (NCC) and compliance The National Construction Code and AS/NZS 3500 set requirements for water supply and drainage pipework in Australia, including materials, sizing and installation practice. This calculator does not check compliance with the NCC or any Australian Standard — it is a simple geometric estimate. Any plumbing work connected to a public water or sewer network, or affecting gas or drainage, should be carried out or checked by a licensed plumber. ## Before you order or specify equipment Use the calculated internal volume as a starting point when sizing a hot water heater, expansion vessel or header tank, then confirm the figure against manufacturer sizing guides and, where relevant, a licensed plumber's assessment of the whole system. Use the pipe's internal diameter, not the nominal size printed on the pipe or its outside diameter. Wall thickness reduces the usable internal diameter, so check the manufacturer's data sheet if you are unsure of the exact figure for your pipe material and class.

Is this a substitute for advice from a licensed plumber?

No. This tool is a planning estimator. For works that affect structure, the National Construction Code (NCC), boundary or dividing-fence, gas, electrics, drainage to a sewer, or similar, consult a suitably qualified professional.

Does this account for fittings, valves or bends?
