As a general guide, habitable rooms are commonly expected to achieve around 2.4 m of clear ceiling height, with reduced allowances permitted in some non-habitable spaces, garages, and parts of attic or roof conversions. Include the thickness of any planned flooring or ceiling finishes if the room is not yet complete, since these can reduce the usable clear height by a meaningful amount. ## Volume per square metre of floor Because a ceiling height is expressed as a length, the air volume per square metre of floor is numerically identical to the height in metres — a 2.4 m ceiling gives 2.4 m³ of air per square metre of floor. To find the total room volume, multiply this figure by the floor area.
