## How the paint weight calculator works This calculator converts a volume of paint, entered in litres, into an estimated weight in kilograms. The formula is straightforward: weight (kg) equals volume (L) multiplied by the paint's density (kg/L). Density varies by paint type — water-based emulsions and acrylics are typically around 1.2 to 1.4 kg/L, while some solvent-based enamels, metallic finishes or heavily pigmented coatings can be denser. If you cannot find a specific figure, common ranges are: water-based interior paints roughly 1.2-1.35 kg/L, solvent-based enamels roughly 1.0-1.2 kg/L, and heavily filled or textured coatings can exceed 1.5 kg/L. Using the manufacturer's stated figure rather than a generic average will give a more reliable estimate, particularly for large orders where small density differences add up. ## On-site and delivery considerations Once you have an estimated total weight, consider how the paint will be delivered and handled. Small orders are usually fine for parcel or courier delivery, but larger quantities may need palletised freight, and total weight can affect delivery costs and access requirements (for example, whether a delivery vehicle can access a site or whether goods need to be carried some distance).
